LSK Global PS is a Korean full service CRO in Seoul, Korea. LSK Global PS has been in business since March 2000. Although small yet, LSK is growing as fast as the number of multinational trials in Korea recently (see the chart below). Just five of us started LSK Global PS eight years ago. Now we have grown to sixty. To meet the increasing domestic and global demand for our services, we have moved to a bigger location recently.

As you may know, Korea is becoming important in Asian clinical trials, particularly for trials in China and Japan. China, Japan, and Korea are very close in genetic polymorphism and disease profiles. Recently, Japan has decided to accept clinical trial data from Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore. This decision positions Korea as a very important country for Japanese drug development, just as Canada is an important clinical trial partner for the US.

China will consider IND in Korea an important piece of information for IND application in China. Often, Korea plays the partner role for global clinical trials in China, because China often demands trials in other Asian countries as part of requirement for trials in China, and Korea, I am told, is a preferred Asian partner country for Chinese clinical trials. In fact, my company is participating in such a trial. My China partner has told me that Korea will become even more important to clinical trials in China in days ahead.

As Koreans increasingly adopt western lifestyle and their longevity reaches that of advanced countries, Koreans’ need for western medicine is increasing. Furthermore Korea, the number ten economy in the world, can afford expensive western medicine.

Korea will become the hub for clinical trials in Northeast Asia, Japan, China, East Russia, and Korea. The reason is very simple. Korean regulatory process is better streamlined than Japan and China. Korea has a very advanced medical infrastructure comparable to western nations. Koreans are receptive to clinical trials too. It is generally accepted that recruitment tends to be timely in Korea compared to Japan.
